The History of Staples

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Staples - who would think that I could write a whole piece on this one stationery supply alone? Well, lets give it a try shall we? The humble staple apparently dates all the way back to the 6th Century, where it was used for something completely different than its common use today. The original use was in fact for holding rocks together, and proof of this has been found in ancient masonry works throughout the world.
Clearly then, they were not the same as the “staples” we have come to know and use regularly today. The modern day staple and home stapler originated much later than the previous, alternativeversion, in 1877, and was patented at this time also. As far as the usefulness of office supplies go, the staple is most definitely one of the top contenders. It is responsible for maintaining order on your desk, reducing clutter, and ensuring that material to be presented is kept together in the correct order, allowing for ample readability and ease by the receiver.

All in all, not the most exciting history or topic to write on. But, if the staple has done so much to prevent our working lives from descending in to chaos, I say we owe the little stationery supplies such as this one, just a few moments in the limelight.

Boost your IT Career

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

While trying to establish a career in the field of Information Technology (IT), you may often find yourself confused and indecisive. Though you may plan to do something different with your IT career, you simply may not get around to it and remain only aspiring for that perfect opportunity.

In order to be recognized you must excel. In order to excel you must be qualified, experienced and able to perform in situations that may challenge others in your field. Some basic ways of doing this are to develop skills, develop credibility through certification and be ready to think outside the box for solutions.

The monotonous routine of your regular job is one of the biggest and most significant reasons for the loss of interest in your job. If you love what you do, nothing can be worse than that. However, if you do not like your job and you continue with it out of some sort of compulsion, then it is best to break all mental barriers and come out of it. You should start elearning new skills that will add value to your career prospects and help you in securing the career that you aspire for. If you are tired of doing server jobs, allow some time for acquiring Cisco skills by doing Cisco online training. Similarly, you can consider learning some Linux skills if you have been working as a Microsoft Exchange specialist. Developing new skills can provide you the advantage to get the next promotion.

Whether you work long term for one company or are looking for other opportunities to grow elsewhere, certifications in your area of expertise add the required credibility to take on greater responsibility and earn more.

Consider that you are always competing for your job with others in the company and outside. Consider also who your company would prefer, a person with an impressive list of certifications or one who has stagnated in their education goals. Sometimes, you may need to take a step backward in order to finally move forward. If you are seen or perceived by your employer only as a “server guy” but wish to work in a different domain, be ready to work nights or do additional shifts to gain work experience in the area you prefer.

You may go through some temporary financial hardships as a result of the job change, but it might prove to be your best career move in the long term. If changes are made according to your master career plan they are likely to yield much better results than simply reacting to short term situations.

Make sure you are useful to your company in many disciplines. This is essential for job security and career growth. If you do no more than is expected of you then you are tied to the one job you do. However if you have initiative and break the typecast of the job to do more than is required, chances are that you will be noticed and rewarded.

Vacuum Cleaners

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

The debate over upright vacuum cleaners or canister vacuum cleaners is a strong one. It usually depends on what kind of flooring you have, but there are other issues to consider, as well. However, most people who argue as to which one they should get don’t stop and think about getting a central vacuum cleaner. They might not realize that they can have one installed even after their home is already built, and they might not realize that these types of vacuums are more affordable than they would think. It’s true to say that they will cost more than the upright and canister vacuums, but that doesn’t mean that they are out of the price range for most people. Individuals who have nice homes, even if they are older homes, can often afford central vacuums. They will also likely want this kind of vacuum system once they realize just how well it works and just how important it can be to keeping a home clean. Getting one into a home can be easy in some cases and more difficult in others, though, so you should know all the facts before you decide to buy one.

If you have a home that’s very old, you might not be able to have a central vacuum system put into it. A lot of places that were built a long time ago have thinner walls than newer construction homes, and because of that the hoses that are needed to run through the walls might not fit. With these types of homes there is nothing that can be done where a central vacuum system is concerned. For most homes, however, there is plenty of space within the walls to run the hoses for a central vacuum. This can be done on your own, or you can hire someone else to do it. Naturally, it will cost you more if you have someone else do the work. It will be less expensive if you choose to do it yourself, but you might not really be prepared for how much work is truly involved in it. The safest and best thing to do is to hire a contractor, unless you’re pretty comfortable with basic tools and have some skills. Baring those things, it’s better for a professional to install the central vacuum system, and the cost is not as bad as many people are lead to believe.

If you decide to go ahead and do it yourself, however, you’ll need basic tools and some good instructions so that you know what to do. By following the proper instructions you’ll have less of a chance at making a mistake. If you have a big problem and have to call someone in to fix it, you might end up paying more than you would have if you just let someone else do the original work. Once you have your system hooked up you can really enjoy the benefits. You’ll be able to vacuum by only carrying around a small, lightweight hose. It goes in the outlets that will be installed in the walls, and the dirt and debris gets vacuumed through the hoses in the walls and into a collection bin. That bin is usually located in the basement or the garage, and it doesn’t have to be emptied that often. It’s a great option for a lot of homeowners.
